How Long Does it Take to Get Used to Braces?

Welcome to our guide on getting used to braces! If you or someone you know is getting braces soon, you might be wondering how long it takes to adjust to this new addition to your smile. Braces can be a big change, but don’t worry, we’re here to help you understand what to expect on this exciting journey.

What are Braces?

Before we dive into how long it takes to get used to braces, let’s talk about what braces actually are. Braces are dental appliances used to straighten and align teeth, helping to correct issues such as crowded or crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, and more. They consist of metal brackets, wires, and sometimes rubber bands that work together to move your teeth into the desired position over time.

Getting Braces Put On

When you first get your braces put on, it’s normal to feel a bit strange or uncomfortable. The orthodontist will carefully attach the brackets to your teeth using a special adhesive and then thread the wires through them. This process may take a couple of hours, but don’t worry, it’s all to help give you a beautiful smile in the end!

Initial Discomfort

After getting your braces, you may experience some initial discomfort or soreness. Your mouth needs time to adjust to this new foreign object, so it’s common to feel a bit of pressure or soreness in your teeth and gums. This discomfort should subside within a few days as your mouth gets used to the braces.

Changes in Eating Habits

One of the first things you’ll notice after getting braces is that your eating habits may need to change. You’ll want to stick to softer foods initially to avoid putting too much pressure on your braces. Foods like soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies can be great options while your mouth adjusts to the braces.

Adjusting to Braces Over Time

Now that you have your braces on, you might be wondering how long it will take to get used to them. The good news is that most people adjust to their braces within a few weeks to a couple of months. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect during this time:

First Few Days

During the first few days after getting braces, you may experience some discomfort as your teeth start to shift. This is completely normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or by using orthodontic wax to ease any irritation from the brackets.

First Few Weeks

As you move into the first few weeks with braces, you’ll start to get more comfortable with them. You’ll likely establish a routine for cleaning your braces and teeth, as well as adjusting your eating habits to accommodate the braces. Your orthodontist may also schedule follow-up appointments during this time to check on your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

First Few Months

By the first few months of wearing braces, you should be well on your way to getting used to them. You’ll notice that the discomfort has significantly decreased, and you may even start to see some early signs of progress in your teeth alignment. Keep up with your oral hygiene routine and follow your orthodontist’s instructions to ensure the best results.

Tips for Getting Used to Braces

Here are some tips to help you get used to your braces more quickly:

1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and braces clean, which can help prevent issues like cavities and gum disease.

2. Use Orthodontic Wax

If you experience any irritation from the braces rubbing against your cheeks or lips, apply orthodontic wax to create a smooth surface and reduce discomfort.

3. Stick to Soft Foods

While your mouth is adjusting to braces, opt for softer foods that are easier to chew to avoid putting too much pressure on your teeth and braces.

4. Attend Regular Orthodontic Appointments

Keep up with your scheduled orthodontic appointments to ensure your braces are adjusted correctly and to monitor your progress throughout the treatment.

5. Stay Positive

Remember that getting braces is a step toward a healthier and more beautiful smile. Stay positive, and focus on the end result to keep yourself motivated throughout the process.
